Process Paper
For our group, choosing the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union as a topic was very easy. All of us share an interest in the Cold War and all of the events of the Cold War, so as soon as we saw the Berlin Wall as a topic there was no hesitation in our selection. We also felt that it was an important event because it was very recent in history. Many people forget how current the events of the Berlin Wall are and many people forget that Germany became united in 1990! Some of our siblings were born before Germany became unified again. It’s crazy to think that this wall in Berlin was standing while our parents were in their 20’s.
Our group conducted research for this project in a very broad manner. One of our members read the book, The Year That Changed the World: The Untold Story Behind the Fall of the Berlin Wall by Michael Meyer, and shared the information that he learned from the book in order for us to incorporate it into our project. The other members of our group chose the Internet as their source for research. We were able to find many things that we had not known about the Berlin Wall as well as many interesting documents, such as the documents for entrance into both sides of Germany. As a group, we were able to use our resources and learn new and interesting facts about the Berlin Wall and
Cold War that we had not known before.
Based on all the options we had available, our group felt that a website would be the best way to present our research and idea of the Berlin Wall in a creative, yet informative way. One of our group members has experience creating websites and some of our members take a web design class in school and that also made the decision to create a
webpage that much easier. We couldn’t write a paper because we wanted to be in a group together and we felt that we couldn’t get everything we wanted to get
across through an exhibit or performance, so the website was where we really felt we had our best chance of reaching the State Fair.
The Fall of the Wall and the Soviet Union relates to this year’s theme, Turning Points in History, because the fall of the Berlin Wall was the beginning of the end of one of the world’s greatest Communist powers as well as the beginning of a new era for Germany. This event turned the world around because the Soviet Union is now broken up into many different countries and Germany is now a united, thriving nation. The fall of the Berlin Wall had a positive impact on the world and ended the reign of the biggest Communist power in history.
