The death-stripOur group found this picture to be extremly demonstrative of all of the aspects of the Berlin Wall. Graffiti was a major part in the Berlin Wall because many street artists would paint murals that were beautiful works of art, while others showed their anger and disgust of the wall through their work. Another element this picture clearly demonstrates is the "death-strip" behind the Wall.
"One could look into the heavily guarded and practically insurmountable border area behind the Wall: the “death strip” was a mined desert, secured with spring guns and policed moreover by armed soldiers in guard towers. At night this area was lit as bright as day by floodlights." http://www.goethe.de/ins/ie/dub/ges/en7955842.htm |
